When the student is ready- the master appears

I first learned this phrase when I began my own journey with reiki over twenty years ago now.

I interpreted it literally at the time- in the form that when we are ready to learn, the right teacher presents themselves.

It’s a principle I’ve applied throughout my work and I still introduce it to students today. I offer it as a message to guide them to listen inwards, following intuition and guidance from source or spirit, rather than being led by the external world and manipulation of mainstream media.

In relation to building a business as a therapist, coach and teacher, it presents an interesting challenge. In order to succeed in a conventional sense, we are measured on how many followers we have, how many likes our posts get, our audience ‘engagement’ .

Are these things a true measure of the difference we are making in the world around us though?

It’s no secret that I don’t enjoy self promotion. But if I don’t play the game, am I invisible? If I choose to pause from ‘posting’ or promoting myself, will I miss that all important client?

In the grand scheme of things I don’t believe this to be true. I am here to make a difference for the right people at the right time. Whether my marketing activity has any bearing on this or not is yet to be proved!

The next part of this, is hearing this message about the student being ready, from a different perspective.

If we follow our own evolving spiritual path we begin to see that each situation life presents us, every moment in fact, is an opportunity for learning.

If we reframe something which comes up as a challenge, as a lesson instead of a problem or issue to be wrangled into submission, and ask what the universe is showing us through this experience, we are seeing the situation itself as the master.And we are the eternal students!

Try it for yourself! Next time something unexpected comes up. Ask yourself what it is that the situation is here to show you. See it as a metaphor for something bigger in your evolution. What have you not yet seen? What is your soul pushing you to explore and resolve? How can you interact with life differently, more meaningfully?
